Spirit of Big Five

Working for the Sustainability of the Galapagos Islands

Problems become challenges.
Thanks to kind contributions, Fundación Galapagos Ecuador is successfully running several projects in the islands, which are:

Recycling of Solid Waste: "Fabricio Valverde Environmental Park"

The Foundation set up and manages the Fabricio Valverde Environmental Park in the town of Puerto Ayora, in Santa Cruz Island, where approximately 18,000 people live. The Foundation chose this town to set up the Center, since it is the most populated one of the Archipelago. Also as part of the Recycling program, the Foundation co-sponsors RELUGAL, a program in charge of collecting used oil and shipping it to the mainland for appropriate disposal.

Coastal Cleaning

Fundación Galapagos Ecuador together with the Galapagos National Park has developed a permanent program of coastal cleaning to avoid ecological damage. Aboard fishing boats, young volunteers from all over the world, work eight days a month, navigating along the shoreline of the islands, cleaning up the accumulated garbage.

Education and Sponsorship

In order to consolidate and reinforce the educational recycling campaign, the Foundation together with the National Park are designing a number of workshops for teachers of local schools. The main topics will focus on the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling. Also the Foundation with the help of the Municipality is coordinating field trips for the local students to the Center. This will help the students to learn about the process and to understand the importance of recycling.
